EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing)
Letting go of past fears.
Traumatic or very frightening memories are stored differently in the brain to other memories, which often means that they continue to cause anxiety or affect behaviour sometimes long after the original event. EMDR is a clinically tested psychological therapy using eye movement, hand taps or sounds to increase the speed of processing of traumatic memories, resulting in the memory being stored in the same way as non-problematic memories and thus ceasing to have a negative impact in the here and now.
EMDR is recommended by the NICE guidelines in the treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and is helpful in allowing individuals to come to terms with difficult, frightening or painful episodes in their past even if they don’t suffer from PTSD.
Rowan is fully trained in EMDR and accredited by EMDR Europe and regularly uses EMDR in medico-legal work. She is also an accredited Cognitive Behavioural (CBT) Therapist and working towards certification as a Schema Therapist.
